UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

Compliance Overview

The UK Government is transitioning to a fully digital border. As part of this programme, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) will become the mandatory digital permission to travel for eligible visitors.

The ETA replaces the previous approach that allowed many non-UK nationals to travel to the UK without prior authorisation and simply present a passport on arrival.

ETA Requirement

From 25 February 2026, all non-UK passport holders who do not require a visa must obtain an ETA prior to travel to the UK.

  • The ETA is not a visa
  • It forms part of the UK’s pre-travel security and screening process
  • It grants advance permission to travel, not a right of entry

Passengers who arrive without a required ETA may be:

  • Denied boarding by the airline, or
  • Refused entry by UK Border Force

Since the scheme’s introduction in October 2023, 19.6 million ETAs have been issued up to September 2025.

Transit Passengers

Transit passengers may also require an ETA, depending on their journey:

  • An ETA is required if the passenger passes through UK passport control
  • Currently exempt:
    • Passengers transiting through Heathrow or Manchester who remain airside and do not pass UK border control
  • Transit rules may change and should always be verified prior to travel

Application Timing

Travellers are strongly advised to apply for an ETA at least three working days before travel, allowing time for the small number of cases that may require additional checks.

ETA Exemptions

You do not require an ETA if you fall into one of the following categories:

British or Irish Citizens

  • Must travel using a British or Irish passport

Visa or eVisa Holders

  • Includes UK work visas, student visas, or Settled / Pre-Settled Status
  • Immigration permission is already digitally linked to the passport

Legal Residents of Ireland

  • Exempt when travelling from within the Common Travel Area:
    • Ireland
    • Guernsey
    • Jersey
    • Isle of Man

Important Note for Dual Citizens

British citizens who normally travel on a non-British passport (e.g. US or EU):

  • Cannot apply for an ETA
  • Must either:
    • Travel using their British passport, or
    • Hold a Certificate of Entitlement in their foreign passport

Failure to comply may result in denied boarding.
